A former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has finally dumped his former party to team up with members of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC), a coalition of some opposition parties.

Fani-Kayode, who served under the regime of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, declared on Monday during a visit to the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in Ado-Ekiti, that he decided to defect to the APC because of the composition of the membership of the new party.

On his frosty relationship with the PDP, he said: “What Nigerians need now is to join hands with the APC leaders, Major General Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu to move the nation forward.”

Fani-Kayode, a former PDP chieftain, who said he was not sure the ruling party was worth salvaging, said he had left the party long ago to pitch his tent “with those that my spirit has been with long ago.”

The former minister expressed fears that: “I am not sure that great leaders have respect for the party again. I am not sure former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is respecting the party again and many others, so I had to bid the party bye-bye.”

Fani-Kayode said he had dumped the PDP for APC,  describing his former party as a sinking ship that cannot be salvaged.

The former Obasanjo’s Special Adviser on Public Affairs further adduced reason to why he defected from the PDP, saying it was because of the abuse of powers by the presidency and members of National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
According to him, what happened during the recent election of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) that was dogged by controversy further revealed the weakness of the president.

He declared that the presidency by its action now makes the Rivers State Governor, Hon.  Rotimi Amaechi, a national hero with the way he is allegedly being persecuted over his emergence as the Chairman of the NGF.
Fani-Kayode said he decided to quit the PDP for a very long time, only that he had not made his intension public.

He said it was rather disheartening that the presidency and the PDP NWC were taking side in a matter involving two members of the party, stating that this signalled that the party lack discipline, fairness and internal cohesion.

He said: “With this open persecution, the presidency and the PDP NWC are only making hero out of Amaechi.  Their action was illogical, 35 people voted and this man scored 19 and his challenger, Governor Jonah Jang garnered 16 votes and the loser turned around to say he won the election.

“Automatically, Amaechi remains the popular wish of the governors’ forum, who is populated by highly distinguished and intelligent Nigerians.  This has shown that no election can be scuttled or teleguided by the Presidency. No matter how powerful an office or someone might be, one should be aware that there is a supreme man that is directing the affairs of men.”

While urging Nigerians to brace up for a titanic battle in 2015, the former minister said, the sordid scenario that dogged the  outcome of the NGF’s election  was enough to believe that the forthcoming elections would be a charade.
