Insecurity in Nigeria: Mark pleads with international community for understanding

President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has pleaded with the International Community to show understanding to the peculiarity of the Nigerian problems and help her out rather than wishing her away.

In a statement issued Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark said when the Australian Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Jonathan Richardson paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja, and that Inspite of the challenges, Nigerians have resolved to stay together as one united country.

He said:”We admit that we have challenges especially insecurity, we are making serious efforts to solve them. They are not insurmountable. All we need is cooperation and understanding of the international community instead of otherwise.

“The National Assembly will do anything through legislation to bring the matter under control as quickly as possible. As you are aware, the government has set up amnesty committee working out a blue print on how to end the crisis.”

Senator Mark added that serious efforts are currently being made to improve the economy of the nation so that our people can be gainfully employed.

He noted that Nigeria has had a long bilateral relationship with Australia and would want the relationship strengthened for the good of the citizens of both nations.

According to him, one way of strengthening the relationship, is exchange programmes between the parliaments of both countries in order to have common legislation for the good of all.

Earlier, the Australian Ambassador to Nigeria said one of his missions is build on the new relationship between the two countries that would be mutually beneficial.

Richardson noted that Nigeria is a country with great potentials needed to be harnessed to improve the socio- economic state of the country.
