Prof. Modupe AdelabuAfter several hours of screening, the appointment of the new Deputy Governor-designate of Ekiti State, Prof Modupe Adelabu, was Tuesday confirmed by the state House of Assembly.

The deputy governor-designate, who until her recent appointment as the Chairman of the state Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), was screened at the parliamentary session by the lawmakers.

The state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, had on May 3, sent the name of Adelabu to the assembly for ratification in replacement for the late deputy governor, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka, who died of cancer on April 6.

As early as 8.a.m following the announcement on the state owned-radio station intimating the public about screening, members of the party as well as the party faithful and well-wishers had gathered at the assembly chambers as a mark of solidarity for the former SUBEB boss.

Adelabu, who later spoke to journalists shortly after the screening exercise, appealed to politicians to cooperate with the state government in building a state everybody would be proud of.

“Irrespective of our political differences, this state belongs to all of us. We should all come together and build a solid state because whatever happens now, either good or bad, will be for all of us
“We are already in a new dawn in the state under the leadership of Fayemi. We should cooperate and work together for the state to move forward,” she said.

Commenting on the new appointment, Adelabu said she was happy to have been appointed, saying she never expected to be in the position until her name was announced by the state government.

“I never expected this position because there was no vacancy until the unfortunate demise of our late deputy governor, Olayinka. So, I never expected it,” she said.

The Speaker of the Assembly added that the conduct of the screening at the parliamentary session was borne out of the lawmakers’ decision.

“We conducted the screening at the parliament based on the decision of the lawmakers. The lawmakers drilled the nominee, and she did not let us down. She answered us intelligently and we didn’t expect anything less,” he added.
