The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has cautioned Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, to have a rethink on his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) being floated by a coalition of some major opposition political parties in the country.
The National Chairman of a faction of the party loyal to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, Mr. Maxi Okwu, said yesterday that the party had advised Okorocha to reconsider his adventure to save him from becoming a political orphan.
"APGA gives this timely advice to Okorocha to save him from becoming a political orphan wandering in political wilderness in
Nigeria’s political horizon,” he said.
Okorocha on Tuesday at a rally in Owerri which coincided with the visit of opposition governors from parties that constitute the APC to the state, had formally declared for the APC.
However, in a swift reaction, Okorocha said he would not join issues with Okwu, whom he said was not recognised as the APGA chairman.
Okwu in his statement said since Okorocha was elected on the platform of APGA, the party felt it was wise to advise him "to have a re-think on his decision to join APC, a political association that has not been registered as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and whose acronym is being contested by another political association."
Okorocha, however, dismissed the APGA advice to reconsider joining APC.
The governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media (Print), Mr. Ebele Uzo, told THISDAY that his joining APC had the support of about 80 per cent of APGA members.
"He is so proud to have found a better place for about 80 percent membership APGA. The governor is a grassroots mobiliser and from what happened during anniversary rally in Owerri, there is no doubt that the governor has the overwhelming support of the people in the new political alignment," he said.
