A former Minister of Youth Development and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Osun State, Senator Olasunkan Akinlabi, has said the people of the state were fed-up with the present administration and had resolved to vote out Governor Rauf Aregbesola, because he has failed to deliver on his promises.
Akinlabi, who spoke in Lagos recently when he met with journalists, said: “Aregbesola will be three years in office come this November, have you seen him commission any project since he assumed office?
“The only thing he has done was when he came out to engage 20,000 youths in Yes ‘O programme where he asked them to be sweeping streets and paying them N10,000 each. My brother, that is not the kind of job we are clamouring for,” he said, adding that “He has failed. What you now see in the entre Osun State is not up to 5,000.”
But rather than build roads, schools and health centres, among other infrastructure, Akinlabi said the governor continued to demolish schools, while lecturers were on strike for the past two months even as students had staged open demonstration to protest the parlous conditions in their schools.
“Aregbesola has failed woefully. It is by their own admission that they have demolished 3,000 schools and they have only 1,000 more to go. It saddens me that since November 2010, he (Aregbesola) has been putting Osun State in focus for wrong reasons.
“We are not surprised because he did not stay in Osun and did not live in Osun before he became governor,” he said.
According to him, the people of the state had thought that Aregbesola would represent change based on what he professed during the electioneering and the period of struggle to reclaim his mandate, adding that the people of the state now knew where the shoes pinches and would decide on who rules them next in 2014.
While expressing confidence in the PDP primaries and the 2014 election, the former minister assured his supporters that the elections would be free, fair and credible and promised to evolve and execute outstanding policies in education, health, transportation, agriculture, infrastructural development, job creation and poverty alleviation, among others.
He said the use of propaganda as evident with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) would not work in the coming poll, pointing out that the outcome of the Edo and Ondo State elections were indications that the Jonathan administration would uphold the policy of one-man, one-vote.
He also said the outcome of the PDP primaries would determine who controls the party machinery in Osun and argued that he remained the most qualified and suited for the governorship.
He held that a combination of his experience both as senator and minister would come handy in his service to Osun people if elected in the election billed to hold next year.
