The seemingly good relationship between Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State and the representative of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district in the senate, Senator Aloysius Etok, may have hit the rocks.

Akpabio had recently made known his intention known to contest the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district at the end of his eight years reign in office.

But Etok, who appeared on the state radio station during the week reacted, warning Akpabio against his ambition as there was no vacancy.

“As for the governor seeking to go to the Senate, I have told him there is no vacancy in the senate. He can look elsewhere. If he needs a vacancy to be filled, let him look into the state executive council vacancy and fill,” Etok said.

The statement by Etok had received mixed reactions from the people of the district, who described Etok’s action as working against the finger that fed him.

The 10 local government chairmen of the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district yesterday at a press briefing said: “It is regrettable that our senator has suddenly grown wings, preferring to stab his benefactor-the finger that fed him through unguided public statements and melancholic outbursts.”

“The six years of Etok in the Senate have been uneventful, marred by poor representation and devoid of development initiatives for the senatorial district and devoid of development initiatives. For instance, it s on recorded that Etok, has never, in the  last six years held a constituency briefing, tour of district, let alone embarking on empowerment initiative capable of engendering sustainable livelihood for the people of the areas despite the huge funding allocated to the area through his office.

“We challenge him to name one project he has attracted from the federal government to the area in his six years of stewardship”, a statement signed by the 10 council chairmen and read by the Chairman of Essien Udim Local Government Area chairman, Hon. Nse Ntue, said.

“It is a clear misdirection, false priority and ill-conceived act of political insincerity for Etok to attempt to review history by perverting the genuine love shown him by Akpabio and the people of Ikot Ekepne Senatorial district.

“We, the chairmen of the 10 local government areas of Ikot Ekpene senatorial district hereby condemn in its entirety, the outburst, vituperations and unwarranted media attacks by Senator Etok on Akpabio and the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district.
“Accordingly, we hereby give Senator Etok seven days with effect from April 24 to retract his position  by way of an unreserved apology to the governor and the entire people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district,” the statement insisted.
