Two aged women have been confirmed killed and 30 houses razed Friday night in Dakum and Jol villages of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. A source from the village said the gunmen struck the two villages Friday night and set the houses on fire as the occupants tried to escape the attack.
The attack in Plateau came as the paramount ruler of the Tiv Nation, Tor Tiv, Dr. Alfred Torkula, has chided the Federal Government for paying lip service to the activities of Fulani herdsmen who have renewed their onslaught by killing and sacking several communities in Benue State.
He equally called on all Tiv sons and daughters to wade into the incessant invasion of Tiv land by Fulani herdsmen with a view to bringing a lasting solution to the problem.
The Tor Tiv, who stated this in Ayiin, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State weekend, lamented the situation in which scores of Tiv people have been killed and advised Tiv sons and daughters to stop playing politics with the matter.
He appealed to the Federal Government, State and Local Government heads to proffer solution to the perennial actions of marauding Fulani herdsmen who have continuously attacked Tiv farmers in the state.
“We can’t continue like this; the herdsmen have continued to attack and kill our people and our farmlands have been destroyed. Solution most be proffered to stop this senseless killings,” he said.
On the Plateau killings, the Majority Leader in the state House of Assembly and Member representing Riyom Constituency, Hon. Daniel Dem, who also confirmed the incident, decried the recent attacks, describing it as sad.
Dem said the villagers had to flee the entire community for safety, adding that “we are tired of this kind of events.”
According to him, “As I am talking to you now, arrangement is been made to mobilise the Mobile Police to the area to beef up security, together with the Special Task Force (STF) operatives.
“Sincerely, I want the security agencies to be up and doing to ensure that permanent peace is restored to the area.”
The lawmaker called on National and State Emergency Management Agencies to visit the affected villages to help with relief material as dozens of people have been displaced and their homes burnt.
“We don’t know what we are going to do; the two villages with over 1000 people have been sacked and the people sent fleeing. We really need the attention of the Federal Government,” he said
He said the displaced persons are currently taking refuge in Hoss Primary School and some fled to Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of the State.
