EDO State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said Thursday, in Benin, that it had uncovered plans by Edo State Government and officials of Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, to invalidate the authentic result sheets for tomorrow’s local government elections in the state by instructing Presiding Officers not to sign the result sheets at the polling units.
The party, in a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Matthew Urhoghide, said that EDSIEC and the state government planned to ensure that officially signed written result sheets were handed over to Presiding Officers at a later time.
He said: “To make this possible, Edo State Government had recruited and deployed ad-hoc staff from their loyal members of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, for use by EDSIEC as officials to conduct the elections in most of the councils in the state.
“The first phase of the plan had already been successfully executed and our party made this known to Edo people in a press release on March 31.
“Edo PDP considers these plans unlawful, criminal and condemnable and reiterates strongly, as it did in its earlier release, that it will raise issues with the election outcome if EDSIEC permits its integrity to be compromised in the unethical ways described above.”
