President Goodluck JonathanA chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, has thrown his weight behind a possible ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidency, saying that what would determine his victory was performance, and not the issue of ceding power to the north, based on the zoning policy of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Abdulrahman who was former National Secretary of the Political Committee of ACF, faulted those opposed to the President’s second term bid based on PDP zoning formula, pointing out that they were not “familiar with PDP politics.”

He spoke in a telephone interview with Vanguard yesterday. His words:  “Jonathan’s eligibility is not based on the zoning policy of the PDP. It is not about the PDP. I am not a member of the ruling party but I know that the members do not observe their own rules.

“It is as if the author of ‘The Animal Farm’ (Eric Arthur Blair, known by his pen name George Orwell) had PDP in mind when he wrote that classic in the forties. In PDP, all animals are equal but some are more equal than others. PDP has no rules just like what obtained in the Animal Farm.

“PDP as the ruling party is supposed to be providing all the policy thrusts for the government but this is not so. Nobody can situate Jonathan’s position. He has all the powers under the sun to contest and win.

“However, the only snag is that Jonathan has surrounded himself with wrong advisers; those who are only interested in their personal welfare. Professor Sam Aluko was the Economic Adviser to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha and he made Abacha’s government work. He acquitted himself well. This was even at a time when the whole world hated Nigeria but Abacha was able to stabilise the economy.

“What might work for America may not work for Nigeria because you can not use the same indices to determine the correct economic policies. Societies where IMF conditionality work are organised and regulated. You can not recommend Harvard ideas in a corrupt society like ours without first fighting corruption.”
