HOUSE of Representatives Minority Whip, Mr. Samson Osagie, has supported calls for amnesty for Islamist sect, Boko Haram, insisting that anything that will ensure peace and stability in the country should be encouraged.
Osagie described the move by the House of Representatives to confer immunity on its members as misunderstood, saying that what the members of the lower chamber in the National Assembly were demanding for was simply a protection over what they say in parliament during sittings.
Osagie, who spoke with Vanguard during the flag-off of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, campaign in Uhunmwode Local Government Area, for the April 20 local government elections, said government should be able to fish out members of Boko Haram, their sponsors and dialogue with them.
He said: “For me, I am in support of anything that will bring peace. If granting amnesty to Boko Haram will bring peace, I am all for it; but I believe too that it is something government needs to consider. We need to fish out those behind them and talk with them, as that will not amount to condoning crime.
“We know what happened in the Niger Delta, the militants took over the place, vandalised pipelines and did a lot of things, but the late President Yar’Adua, in his wisdom, thought it wise to grant them amnesty. I believe that Boko-Haram and their collaborators should be identified by government and once they are identified, they should be discussed with and other ways should be found to ensure that their activities are reduced.”
