AHEAD the forthcoming April 20 local government elections in Edo State, Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the state has raised alarm over alleged plans by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to inflate the voters’ register with a view to manipulating the polls.

Speaking through the state chairman of the party, Mr. Thomas Okosun, ACN said INEC in the state demanded N4 million from Edo State Independent National Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, to enable it print fresh voters’ register for those who have changed their residential addresses.

He said the action was even illegal since the law stipulated that one cannot change addresses 30 days to an election.
Efforts made to get the spokeswoman of INEC, Mrs Sule proved abortive as she could not be reached on her cell phone.

Okosun said: “PDP in collaboration with INEC is attempting to alter the voters’ register in view of the council elections.
“In the past few weeks, INEC had claimed that it has thousands of people, who are changing their residence and they have demanded from EDSIEC N4 million to print new voters register, whereas between 2011 and 2012 elections only between 43 or 48 people changed their residency.

“In the past few weeks, INEC is claiming that thousands of voters have changed their place of voting, therefore, they need the money to print new voters’ register. Whereas the law is very clear that 30 days to the election, you cannot change your place of voting.
“EDSIEC had already paid and collected the voters’ register that it wishes to use in the forthcoming council elections but INEC is asking for additional N4 million.

“We are alerting the public about the clandestine moves of PDP and INEC to inflate the voters’ register in view of the forthcoming council elections. But we are warning that any move to rig the election will be resisted,” he added.
