World Bank approves $170m for PHC in Nigeria

The World Bank has approved a $170 million grant for primary health care pilot projects in three Nigerian states.

Leader of the World Bank Task Team Dinesh Nair said the grant, which would be a result-based funding arrangement, would be deployed in Ondo, Adamawa and Nasarawa states to address immunisation, maternal and Newborn health projects and to control communicable diseases, reports the Premium Times.

He made the announcement while visiting the Ondo state capital Akure and disclosed that $50 million will be spent in the area, while executive director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

AdoMohammed also promised that the Federal Government would continue to provide primary health care support for Ondo State in conjunction with the new funds. According to the CIA World Factbook, the maternal mortality rate in Nigeria was 630 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2010.
