The state pardon granted by the Federal Government to former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has continued to generate mix reactions among Bayelsans.
Special Adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson on Political Matters, Chief Fred Agbedi; former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, Chief Nathan Egba, who served under Alamieyesigha; Chief Timipre Sylva, and the state Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Osom Macbere, lauded the pardon as welcome development.
Former state Secretary of Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Mr. Morris Alagoa, flayed the action, describing same as a shame and set back to the fight against corruption in the country.
Chief Agbedi, said: “His (Alamieyeseigha’s ) pardon is a welcome development. We appreciate it because it will enable him bounce back. He has contributed immensely to the state and national development.”
Chief Egba disagreed with those opposed to the state pardon granted the former Bayesa governor, saying: “I expect that Nigerians should, by now, learn not to rush to judgment each time there is a presidential decision that appears controversial.
In this particular case, Mr. President ought to be commended for his courage to grant state pardon to all those affected, particularly Gen. Oladipo Diya and his colleagues as well as Chief Alamieyeseigha. As a man of conscience and high moral standing, Mr. President knows that the former governor’s sins were more political than criminal, in those hectic days of the infamous ‘political’ Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.”
