The Secretariat of National Good Governance Tour (NGGT) has described as unfortunate the claim by Lagos State Government that it did not support the tour of projects across the country.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the Coordinator of the tour, Mr Samuel Ajayi.

It held that contrary to a statement credited to Gov Babatunde Fashola, Lagos state government was indeed party to the national good governance tour agreement.

“The NGGT secretariat views with concern and deep regret the statement credited to the governor who has described the on-going tour as ill-conceived.’’

While extolling his administration on its 2,100th Day in Office, Lagos state governor reportedly said the tour was designed to appear busy and that the Federal Government has no project to inspect.

“It must be shocking to all who are familiar with how the tour was conceived, and is being implemented, that it has taken Fashola nearly six months to dissociate Lagos government from it.

“For the records, Lagos state was duly represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, on the committee set up by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, to ratify the templates for the tour.

“The final framework was approved by all state governors without exception,’’ the statement said.

It reiterated that the tour was non-partisan, hence the involvement of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Radio Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), and women and youth leaders.

Others are representatives of the Nigeria Governors Forum Secretariat and reporters from the nation’s print and electronic media.

According to the statement, Fashola should be appreciative of the Federal Government because, far more than other states, the entire Lagos State, like Abuja, runs on federal government infrastructure and services.

It said the federal government is not a rival, neither is it in competition with states.

“It is to formulate policies in partnership with states and help to provide infrastructure for the development of the country.

“The governor should stop this idea that Lagos state is a rival of the federal government. He should embrace the principle of cooperation in governance for the development of Lagos and Nigeria.’’

It, however, stated that in the event of any state opting out, the team will proceed to inspect federal projects, which are spread across the country.

Coming soon after a similar attack on the tour by Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo, the NGGT expressed regrets that some governors of certain political persuasion were nervous about the impending tour of their states.

It challenged such state governors to demonstrate that they had nothing to hide by allowing the team unhindered access to what they had done in the past years.
