PoliceA  navy rating attached to the NNS Anansa, Calabar,  Udo Edet, last Sunday, allegedly stabbed  to death a police corporal,  identified as Sunday Agida, attached to the Akim Police Division, Calabar   for ‘interfering’  in a  squabble  between him and a lady. The rating  is currently cooling his heels at the Cross River State Criminal Investigation Department, (CID), Diamond Hill, Calabar.

The incident reportedly started when the rating, driving in a Toyota Camry after the excitement of the Super Eagles victory over Burkina-Faso in the Cup of Nations final, hit one Mrs. Bassey’s Honda Accord Car and inflicted a deep dent at the rear of the car  which resulted in an argument with  the woman. The woman allegedly insisted that Edet  should pay for the  damage on her car.

But Edet allegedly brushed off  the  woman’s demand, threatening to create a scene. Sensing that the man was not going to settle the matter amicably, Mrs Bassey, according to an eye witness, “put a phone call  to her husband informing him of the development and her husband phoned the Akim Area Police Command, soliciting for their intervention in the matter”.

A team was sent to the scene but the rating refused to go with them to the police station.

It was at this point that the slain corporal and one of his friends joined  the crowd to appeal to the rating  to follow the woman to the police station, to resolve the matter. By then, a crowd had gathered, and the continued demand by the crowd that Edet should follow the policemen to the station angered him the more, especially when  he discovered that Agida and his friend who just joined the crowd were also policemen and he began to accuse Agida  and his friend of interfering in a matter they knew nothing about.

An eye witness said the suspect  threatened to “deal with them  – Agidi and friend – if they didn’t leave the scene”.

In apparent  transfer of aggression, Edet allegedly dashed into his car and brought out a dagger and stabbed the policeman  in the stomach, opening  a hole in the stomach revealing  the victim’s intestines .

Realising his action, the rating started crying.

Agida joined the police in 2009.  He was married with two children. The wife is said to be two-months pregnant.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Cross River Police Command , DSP John Imoh, said the  suspect had been arrested and would appear in court soon.
