NO fewer than120 persons have been rendered homeless in Bomadi, Bomadi Local Government Area, Delta State following a heavy rainstorm that destroyed over 33 buildings in the area.
The rain storm, which started at about 4 pm on Thursday, also destroyed 12 high tension electricity poles, throwing the area into darkness. Areas mostly affected by the disaster were the NDDC road and the Orubiri III quarters of the town.
Our correspondent who visited the area in the early hours of yesterday, reports that victims of the rain storm have resorted to taking shelter in homes of relatives and sympathizers.
One of the victims, Epedei-eperekumor Sunday, a mother of three, who spoke to newsmen expressed shock at the incident, saying that her family narrowly escaped death as one of the high tension electricity poles brought down by the storm landed on the roof of their building.
Saying that they were presently taking refuge in a neighbour’s home, she however expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives as there was power outage in the area at that time of the incident.
Also speaking with newsmen, another victim, Miss Felicia Ebikake said the storm blew off the roof of her father’s building and her shop, adding that they were forced to spend the night at the residence of a good spirited individual who took pity on them.
Reacting to the incident, an opinion leader in the area, Mr. Godspower Oporomo lamented that the victims were going through untold hardship, reiterating that their means of livelihood have been destroyed.
He appealed to the state government to take urgent steps towards ameliorating the pains of the affected persons.
