Residents of Mushin, a thickly populated Lagos neighbourhood, have raised an alarm over incessant robbery attacks in the area. They have therefore called on the government to come to their aid.
The Mushin residents claimed that robbers who usually operate on motorcycles popularly called Okada have been terrorising the area for over six months. According to them, these agents of darkness are not deterred by the presence of law enforcement agents.
A cross section of residents who spoke to Vanguard Metro said most of the attacks are carried out in the early hours of the day when workers are going to their respective places of work. The most affected areas include Fatai Atere Way, Ojekunle, Palm Avenue and Isolo Road. Others are Bamgboye street, Fadeyi, Idioro, Olosa and Ilasa.
Series of attacks
Four residents of the area were allegedly subjected to series of attacks recently by the robbers who brandished various dangerous weapons at their victims. Some of the victims who spoke to VM explained that although Mushin has been known for violence, the situation has worsened due to incessant robbery attacks in the area.
One of the victims who identified herself as Mrs. Lucia Ikeh said she paid a visit to her brother at Isolo Road but was attacked by the robbers at Ojukunle street.
‘’An Okada rider blocked me and his ‘passenger’ brought out a gun and pointed it at me. I was forced to surrender all my belongings to them,” she said. Another victim, Matthew Obino, a trader at Daleko Market said that he lost N300,000 to Okada robbers who stopped him at gun point and demanded the bag containing the money.
