NSNSThe President-elect of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Yinka Gbadebo has appealed to the government of Ogun State to reconsider its earlier decision to merge the state owned Tai Solarin University of  Education, (TASUED), with the state university at Ago-Iwoye.

Comrade Yinka Gbadebo made this known in a statement made at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, over the weekend.

He said that the new leadership of NANS is compelled to write the open letter as part of its commitment to the struggle for quantitative and qualitative education in Nigeria.

Gbadebo appealed to the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, to reconsider the current decision to scrap Tai Solarin University of Education, but instead give consideration to   adequate funding of the institution and other educational citadels in Ogun State.

He added that this is within the ambit of pragmatic reality of the need to educate the younger generation in preparation for the future needs and challenges of civilization, economic growth and development.

His words; ‘’Sir, from available statistics, Ogun State currently produces graduates of about 55,000 at the secondary school level, which naturally cannot be effectively absorbed by the available tertiary institutions in the state, hence the need to establish more tertiary institutions and the need to strengthen the existing ones.

According to him, “The institution in question, according to the NUC, ranks one of the best universities (tertiary institutions) in Nigeria. Tai Solarin University of Education is also the only university that specializes in the training of professional educators in Nigeria.”

He posited that the dissolution of the ‘’great university in the comity of qualitative education delivery institutions in Nigeria may deal a great blow and entrench a massive lacuna in the opportunity of the average teenager, youth, secondary school graduate to get quality education which is the major component of the historical antecedent that the Ogun people are known for.” The NANS president referred to Ogun as a state that is in history presented as the forerunner of both formal education and civil literacy in Nigerian society.”
