Electronic Voting in NigeriaCONGRESS for Progressive Change, CPC, All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP,  and elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, yesterday opposed calls by the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, for the use of e-voting in the 2015 elections, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, cannot be trusted on e-voting.

National Publicity Secretary of ACN, Alhaji Lai Mohammed had stated through a statement that electronic voting would bring down the cost of elections, stabilise the polity, eliminate the atmosphere of war  usually associated with elections and erase the fear introduced into the voting process with the involvement of security agencies.

Opposing the move, Adebanjo said he doubted the ability of INEC to faithfully utilise the system, saying, “It has been a case of deception by the electoral umpire in Nigeria and the people calling for electronic voting have basis for it, but the unfortunate thing is the doubt on the minds of Nigerians whether the process will be free and fair.

There is nothing wrong in calling for an electronic voting system in 2015, but whether the process will be fair is the problem. If it could be ascertained that the process will be devoid of any rancour, there is nothing wrong with it.”

Similarly, CPC said the idea of electronic voting in 2015 was a low-burner.

The party through its National Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin, said INEC did not have the capacity to conduct election through electronic voting system and could not be trusted.

His words: “INEC does not have the capacity to use the electronic voting system because the same umpire in the past had huge resources and refused to function as expected while the umpire cannot boast of credible voters register.”

For ANPP, its National Publicity Secretary,  Emma Eneukwu, said: “Our party has not taken a position on the issue for now, but we will soon take a position when the working committee and the national leadership of the party meet.”
