Two policemen at a checkpoint, yesterday, lost their lives during an exchange of fire with unknown gunmen in Kano State.
An eyewitness said the incident occured around 4pm when the gunmen in a tricycle attacked the checkpoint located at Ring road by Tishama junction.
The source explained that the attack triggered pandemonium in the vicinity resulting to a number of people sustaining various degrees of injury.
Narrating the incident, the source who pleaded anonymity said, “I saw what looked like lifeless bodies of two policemen on the ground during the gun duel that lasted 10 minutes.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris confirmed that the attakers came on tricycles from various directions and opened fire on the police personnel on duty.
Idris also said two policemen died in the ensuing gun battle, adding that most of the gunmen escaped with bullet wounds.
He, however, said that the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, had responded with the intention to track down the fleeing gunmen, and asked residents of the area to be vigillant and report any suspicious character to the security agents even as he noted that “effective policing of the community required the contribution of all”.
Meanwhile, JTF operatives have cordoned off the area and were seen screening vehicules as well as monitoring movements of people with the hope of establishing a lead that would help them in unravelling those involved in the killing of the policemen.
