The mission of three suspected members of the Black-Axe Confraternity to retaliate the death of one of their members whom they claimed was killed by a rivalry cult group during a clash at Alaba International Market recently, was rendered unaccomplished following their arrest.
The trio: Chukwuneku George, Nnoso Eze and Joseph Lawesi, who are currently cooling their heels at the Ikeja Special Anti-Robbery Squad, were arrested with a locally-made cut-to- size gun in Maza-Maza,along the Lagos/Badagry expressway.
They are however, trying all they could to convince the operatives that they are not robbers as charged but cultists.
Sources at SARs told Crime Guard that the suspects were picked up following an intelligence report received that they were at the verge of carrying out a robbery attack on some South-East bound passengers at the Maza-Maza Motor Park.
A police source said: “The security men at the park suspected their moves and when they inquired what their business was, they couldn’t provide any meaningful explanation. And when the security men searched their bags, to their amazement, they discovered a locally made cut-to size gun and six live cartridges, which they handed over to us.
That motor park is known for armed robbery attacks where many South-East bound passengers and traders have been attacked. We have been making serious effort to apprehend these robbers. So when we got that call, we went swiftly to apprehend them”,he said.
We are not robbers
But the suspects insisted they were not robbers, informing that they were only on their way to avenge the death of one of their own when they were accosted by Policemen attached to Satellite division. They all confessed to have joined the Black Axe confraternity at different times in Enugu.
According to Nnoso Eze:“The gun recovered from us belongs to my late friend, Frayo. When I moved to Lagos in July 2012,to live with an uncle in Ajangbadi, I got acquainted with some friends at Alaba International Market. Among them was Frayo. We were all members of the Black Axe. But during a fight with Eeye confraternity at Alaba International Market over supremacy, he was killed.
“When I heard that Frayo was dead, I was shocked. Then, Chukwujekwu and Lawesi who were also Black Axe members wanted to flee Alaba immediately. But I told them that I knew where Frayo hid his gun and suggested we should get it and avenge his death. That was why I took them to the park where the gun was hidden.
But when I got it, an argument ensued between I and an Indian hemp seller over his refusal to give me my balance. It ensued into a fight, and in the porcess, he started dragging the bag with me. Unknown to m e, it was a mere plough to see what was inside my bag.
“A taskforce official waded into the matter and insisted that I opened the bag and when they saw it was a gun, I was immediately arrested alongside my friends”, Eze said.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police command, Ngozi Braide said the suspects would be charged to court at the completion of investigations.
