A Plateau State community, Taroh of Kadarko in Wase Local Government Area, has accused the Special Task Force in Jos and the 3rd Amoured Division of the Nigerian Army of genocide.

On behalf of the community, a socio-cultural and political group, Ngwang Ishi Otarok, alleged that the military targets to wipe out the tribe.

Soldiers had reportedly stormed the four villages in the local government areas last week, killing about 39 innocent people and leaving over 150 others injured.

The attack followed the alleged killing of six soldiers by unknown gunmen in Angwan Nanmi, a Taraba state town that shares border with Plateau.

The soldiers reportedly invaded the villages, Kadarko, Mutum Biyu, Wadatan Arewa and Wadatan Kasuwa, to avenge the death of their colleagues.

Speaking to journalists in Jos on Wednesday, May 6, the Chairman of the group, Lohbut Jangle and the Secretary, Zingfa Danbaki, said the soldiers who invaded the villages came in heavy military vehicles, conveying arms and ammunition.

According to a statement by the community, the military also killed Police and civil defence officers on duty.

“After arming themselves with all logistic, including petrol used in burning of houses and people killed, machetes, tire etc and the local militia from Wase town, who served as guides, they descended on the people for two consecutive days unleashing terror and horror on helpless and armless civilians for just no cause.

“A notable trend in this unbridled, callous, unwholesome impunity is the scenario, where even Police and civil defence officials on duty were shot, killed and burnt at their duty posts in full Police and civil defence uniform,” the statement entitled ‘Planned genocide against the Tarok race by the Nigerian Army and the Plateau State Government’ said.

The spokesman for the Special Task Force, Ikedichi Iweha, however denied the claims, stating that the soldiers were after militiamen, who have been terrorising the area, and not civilians.
