The candidate of the All Progressives Congress and female governorship aspirant in Taraba State,  Aisha Jummai Alhassan, has lost the race to the People’s Democratic Party’s aspirant, Darius Dickson Ishaku in the rerun election held on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

Alhassan, a serving senator, polled 275,984 votes, losing to Ishaku with a difference of 93,334 votes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer for Taraba, Prof. Ahmed Kyari, declared Ishaku winner in Jalingo on Sunday, April 26, having won 10 local government areas with accumulated votes of 369,318 at the completion of rerun election.

Alhassan had urged INEC to cancel the entire April 11 election in Taraba State, stating it was marred by electoral fraud – the claim INEC invalidated by fixing April 25 date for a rerun election.

Many Nigerians, in and outside Taraba State, had hugely supported the senator’s candidacy, given that she would have become Nigeria’s first democratically elected governor.
