About 95 people are said to have died in the Egba, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State after an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The attackers reportedly invaded the area at about 6am on Sunday, March 15, and began to attack people in their homes.

They were said to have killed mostly women and children during the attack.

“They came with arrows, locally-made guns and knives when most of us were still asleep and started killing us. It was a very bad day for us. I believe that those killed are between 95 and 100 as I counted up to 80 bodies being taken away by people in uniform,” a survivor named Oche told Punch.

“Most of those slaughtered were women, children and the aged. Almost all the houses in the community were razed by the attackers,” he added.

The attack was also confirmed by the State Police Commissioner, Hyacinth Dagala, who however said that only 30 people had been confirmed dead.

Dagala also assured that he had taken the necessary steps to assure adequate security in the area.
