NIGERIA: FG May Move Student IDPs to Unity Schools

 As part of it’s humanitarian interventions to bring succour to persons affected by the on-going war against Boko Haram terrorists in the North-eastern states, the federal government said it was making plans to transfer some of the school children presently staying in displaced persons camp to the nation’s Unity Schools.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had put the estimated number of children domiciled in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camps at about 406,310.

In a statement issued yesterday by a Press Officer in the agency, Mr.  Manzo Ezekiel, government said it was determined to assist the affected children to acquire qualitative education under its Safe School Initiative.
The statement quoted the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as having affirmed the commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan to support the displaced persons.
She  said government was concerned about the education of children affected by the security challenges in the North-east, and  has therefore concluded arrangement to move some of them to various Unity Schools in the country under its Safe School Initiative.
The minister spoke of the government’s plan when she accompanied the Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi, to flag-off of  relief distribution to commence  persons from Chibok and Mousa communities of Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, camped in Kuje, a satellite town in the Federal Captial Territory (FCT).

She assured the IDPs from Chibok of the continual humanitarian supports of the federal government through NEMA, noting that other displaced persons, including those living in the FCT are already benefitting from similar gesture.
Responding on behalf of the IDPs, spokesperson of Chibok community in the FCT, Mr. Gapani Yagana, appreciated the federal government for the continued supports given to them.
Okonjo- Iweala assured the people that government was expediting efforts towards the restoration of security in their communities to enable them return home soonest.
Some of the  items distributed to the IDPs were food and non-food items including bags of rice, grains, sleeping materials, clothing and sanitary items.
