Former Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, Friday advised students of tertiary institutions across the country, not to allow themselves to be manipulated by unscrupulous political elite to engage in political violence.
Bafarawa made the remark while receiving members of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students of the Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, who paid him visit at his residence in Sokoto.
He cautioned them to be vigilant and not to be like those thugs who are being used to unleash violence on perceived opponents.
Bafarawa advised Nigerian students to concentrate fully on their academic pursuit and shun political activities that would affect their academics.
According to him, he was delighted to hear that facilities installed by his administration to promote Veterinary Science in the University were still being used in the institution.
While appealing to the students to work hard to excel in their studies, Bafarawa advised them to shun those who were using propaganda and lies to destroy the unity of the country.
"Every sensible politician of our country today is doing everything possible to propagate peace and unity.
"Therefore, it is pertinent to advise you as my own children to be careful with those you associate with and keep away from selfish politicians, “he said.
The former governor said he made education a priority during his tenure and assured them of all the necessary assistance towards achieving their goals.
Bafarawa to this end, accepted to be the patron of the Association as demanded by the students.
Earlier, The President of the Association, Malam Usman Rayyanu Abubakar, commended the former governor for his commitment to the development of education in the state.
He said over 60 students of the veterinary sciences of the Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto had benefitted a lot due to the availability of the facilities installed in the institution by his government.
Abubakar announced the resolution of the students to confer him with the Grand Patron of the Association.
