Following the increasing cases of attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign convoy, the Presidency on Tuesday expressed concern over the attacks, warning that such acts portend danger if not nipped in the bud.

The Special Adviser to the President on Intra-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi, told journalists on Tuesday in Abuja that the incessant cases of attacks on the president’s campaign train were condemnable.

“It is only an unpatriotic citizen that will not condemn such acts,” Obi told journalists.  “It calls for out right condemnation,  it calls for serious caution, because it is really a dangerous trend,” he said.

The Presidential Aide who is also cordinating the adherence of political parties to the peace accord recently signed in Abuja by President Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC) said under no circumstances should the president be harmed in any part of the country.

According to Obi, “the president’s convoy should not be attacked anywhere in the  country, be it village or city. It is condemnable for the president to be attacked,” he maintained.

Jonathan’s Campaign convoy has come under attacks in the northern part of the country, where Gen. Buhari has a strong followership.

The attacks first occurred in Katsina State, followed by Bauchi at the campaign rally. The president’s convoy was said to have passed a street in Gombe a few minutes before a suicide bomber detonated a bomb killing and injuring several persons.

To that end, the former Senator also reiterated the commitment of President Jonathan to the peace accord,  stressing that “the president has shown full commitment to the accord and would continue to uphold the rules and principles surrounding peaceful elections.”

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) Prof. Oshita Oshita said the recently constituted National Peace Committee on 2015 Elections is a moral force to the already existing Nigerian constitution and the Electoral Act.

Oshita, speaking against the backdrop of the peace committee activities explained that notwithstanding the absence of institutional mechanism to punish perpetrators of elections violence,  “the peace committee will act like a moral force to the constitution,  it will be a moral force to the electoral act and to existing laws against electoral violence.”

Oshita stressed that the peace committee remains strategic to ensuring a peaceful 2015 general elections.
