Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, yesterday told Governor Aliyu Wamakko, to prepare to handover to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Abdallah Wali, by May 29.

He also said God had ordained President Goodluck Jonathan as the President of Nigeria, adding that unscrupulous politicians were only using religion to deceive people in the North.

He was speaking at a campaign rally of the PDP, which the State Deputy Governor and leader of the party in the state, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, was conspicuously absent.

Addressing party supporters at the commencement of PDP governorship campaign at the Kangiwa Square Sokoto, Bafarawa averred that Wamakko should get ready to handover power to Wali, saying he has no doubt that the PDP would win the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

He maintained that the large turnout of supporters at the rally was an indication that PDP would wrest power from the All Progressive Congress in the state.

“My prayer and hope is that we are planning to bid goodbye to Wamakko for us to take over. So, Wamakko should get ready to hand over to Wali.

“If you look at this mammoth crowd here and compare it with the one at the APC rally few days ago, you will come to the conclusion that victory is ours in the forthcoming governorship election,” Bafarawa said.

He emphasised that God had destined Jonathan as the leader of Nigeria and that it was not a mistake, pointing out that some politicians were using religion to deceive people in the North, stressing that their antics would end up in vain.

Bafarawa said he has no plans to work against the interest of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, contrary to falsehood being peddled by the APC in the state.

“In the past they deceived people of Sokoto by telling them that I am a member of the Shi’ite sect and now they are spreading false messages that I am planning to remove the Sultan if PDP wins the governorship election in the state.

“But the truth of the matter is that PDP cannot destroy the legacy of our forefathers, which is cherished by our people and I am not out to cause chaos in the state.

“You cannot get power by sleeping on your beds. I am not in this because of money or position but I want our people to be rescued from poverty and deprivation,” Bafarawa stressed.

He called on the party supporters to redouble their efforts to ensure PDP’s victory in the forthcoming election.

In his remark, former National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bello Haliru, advised the people of the North to shun unscrupulous politicians, who are using religion to deceive them.

He urged people to vote for Wali, assuring that he would bring the desired change in the state.

The Supervising Minister of Health, Alhaji Khaliru Alhassan, who also spoke at the event, urged party supporters in the state to join hands together in order to return Sokoto to mainstream politics.

He noted with dismay that those who were entrusted with power by the national leadership of the party had betrayed it and defected to the APC in the state.

Alhassan said to this end, all hands must be on deck in order to get Sokoto back to the mainstream politics in the country.

Also speaking, the Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu, expressed satisfaction with the large turnout of party supporters at the event, saying it was an indication that PDP was waxing stronger in Sokoto State, contrary to insinuations by political opponents.

He stressed that supporters could only show the party’s strength by voting massively to ensure PDP’s victory in the forthcoming general elections.

In his acceptance speech, the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Senator Abdallah Wali, said he was determined to liberate people of Sokoto from an incompetent administration that succeeded in bringing poverty to the state.

He described Sokoto as the poorest state in the country, saying the task before PDP was enormous in order to redress the ugly trend.

“We have made situation analysis of all facets of life in Sokoto State under Governor Aliyu Wamakko’s administration and the picture is a sad one.

“Our administration will empower youth and women to be able to engage in productive ventures that will get us out of the unenviable ranking by the National Bureau of Statistics of being the most poverty stricken state in the federation.

“Our education is at its lowest ebb, while lecturers in our tertiary institutions have been on strike for over a month due to poor remuneration,” he said.

“Wali pledged to give priority to education, health, infrastructure and youth empowerment if given the mandate come 2015.

“The only credible alternative to the people is to vote for PDP that will restore the good image of Sokoto and improve the living standards of the people,” he added.

PDP Zonal Vice-Chairman North-west, Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure, presented the PDP flag to Wali.

Meanwhile, the PDP leader in the state, Mukhtari Shagari and two PDP governorship aspirants Yusuf Suleiman and Senator Abubakar shunned the rally in the state.

THISDAY gathered that this was as a result of the acrimony in the state, following the emergence of Senator Abdallah Wali as the PDP governorship candidate.

Rumours were rife that the supporters of the three governorship aspirants were planning to defect to the APC.
