The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for always celebrating terror acts for political reasons.

This came as the APC governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Dakuku Peterside, restated his commitment to peace in all the communities in the state if elected governor in next month’s election.

Wike spoke on Tuesday in Port Harcourt when he visited the campaign office of the former PDP governorship aspirant, Mr. Ibinabo Michael-West, who has collapsed his campaign structure into Wike’s team.

Wike said it was “unfortunate and anti-people” to play politics with terrorism and advised the APC to emulate the opposition politicians and people of France who stood with their government after last week’s terror attacks.

He said: “Nigerian opposition leaders should learn to put Nigeria first, rather than using terrorism to play politics.

“We should rally round the federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan to defeat terrorism. The opposition should consider the peace of Nigeria at all times.”

On the forthcoming general election, Wike commended Michael-West for collapsing his campaign organisation into the New Rivers 2015 for the victory of the PDP.

He said the PDP would win all elections in the state to ensure the development of the state.

In his remarks, Michael-West said with the conclusion of the primary, PDP remains the overriding interest of the party members.

He assured Wike that all party leaders would work in conjunction with the New Rivers Vision 2015 to lead PDP to victory.

In another development, the APC governorship candidate in the state, Peterside, has restated his commitment to enthrone peace in all communities if elected governor of the state.

Peterside made the declaration on Tuesday when he visited the paramount ruler of Abua Kingdom, King Kaleh Obuge, in his palace at Otari community, in Abua/Odual local government area of the state, to seek his royal blessings for his governorship bid.

He said: “Your Majesty, I am here to inform you, as our traditional and spiritual leader that your son has been nominated by one of the leading political parties, the APC, to run for the governorship of the state on February 28, and to seek for your blessings.

“One of our cardinal programmes, if we are elected in February, we will pursue peace in our communities. Nobody can talk of peace if you don’t look at the foundation that promotes peace; that is justice.

“Where there is love and unity, peace reigns. Where there is no peace, if you like, construct the best road there, put the best electricity there; there will be no peace there. Your Majesty, we will need your support and partnership as we pursue peace in Rivers State.”

He said his administration would liaise with federal government and relevant government agencies for the establishment of police stations in strategic communities in Abua/Odual local government area, as well as ensure that waterways in the area and other parts of the state are adequately secured.

Peterside promised to uplift farmers in the area, through credit support to enable them maximise the agricultural potentials of communities in the area, pointing out that the people of Abua/Odual would be part of the economic boom of the state under his administration.

He lauded the Abua monarch living up to his promise to use the period of his reign to bring peace to the crisis-ridden Abua communities, saying that no indigene of the Kingdom, who saw what crisis did in the area in the past would encourage violence again.

“I saw what crisis did to Abua/Odual; other people also saw what crisis did to Abua and what crisis can do to a people. I don’t think any Abua/Odual son will wish for those days to come again.”

In his response, the paramount ruler of Abua Kingdom, King Kaleh Obuge, reiterated his appeal to the state and federal government to increase security in the communities, through the erection of checkpoints and provision of gunboats in order to tackle rising cult- related crisis in the area.
