The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed concern over the safety of its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, and his family after his residence in Abuja was raided in the early hours of Monday by unknown invaders.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said while hoping that a police investigation would unravel what happened, it was either those who attacked the residence at 1.30a.m. are robbers or assassins.

It said while Oyegun was away attending a previously unscheduled meeting in Abuja the invaders struck, his wife who was at home was left deeply traumatised by the raid

‘’The facts of the raid as available so far point to a sinister motive. For example, only Oyegun’s room was ransacked in the whole house. Common sense dictates that if the invaders were robbers, they would have ransacked the whole house in search of money and other valuables which they might have believed were in the residence

‘’The invaders, two burly men, removed the window burglary bars to gain access into the residence from the back, and then made straight for the bedroom of our national chairman. Police security was in place at the residence when the incident happened,’’ APC said.

While giving an account of what transpired in a telephone interview with THISDAY, Oyegun said: “The intruders gained entrance into his room through the window at night. He said for him, it was unusual for the thieves to invade a  four- bed room apartment and just enter one of the  rooms.

According to Oyegun, although no harm was done to his family, the  invaders  only tampered with his bag and made away with valuables.

“It was the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, who first broke the news of the raid in Oyegun’s house during the opening/inauguration of the the party’s presidential campaign council in Abuja. Amaechi said Oyegun had requested to be excused from the function to enable him be with his family or manage the trauma arising from the incident.

However, the party said while it does not known who was behind the raid, it was worth noting that the angry rhetoric and vitriolic personality attacks that had been directed at the opposition by the top leadership of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their spokesmen have heightened tension and put the lives of opposition politicians at risk, ahead of the forthcoming elections.

It expressed gratitude to God for saving the lives of the APC national chairman and his wife, wondering what would have happened if the chairman had been home at the time of the raid.
