The National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Kayode Ajulo, on Sunday said the party was yet to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate ahead of the presidential election.

Saying the party’s support is still open to President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, he stated that the party had looked critically at the credentials of all the party candidates aspiring to lead Nigeria and would make its position known to Nigerians soon.

Ajulo, who spoke with journalists in Lagos, said even where the LP was not fielding a presidential candidate for the 2015 election, there were procedures that must be gone through before the choice of the candidate the party will support would arrived at.

“That the party has adopted a candidate is fallacy. The Labour Party that I know. The Labour Party that I’m the national secretary and which has Alhaji Abdulkadri Salam as the chairman and the only party the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognises up till today; we have not endorsed President Jonathan as our presidential candidate.

“In 2011, we did that and we passed some processes before coming to the conclusion that he would be our adopted candidate. But in 2015, it is a different election. This is a different ball game. The man has been tested and the verdict of the party over him will soon be passed. So for anybody to now come to that conclusion that we have adopted him, I say big no! Because if there is anybody that should know I think the office of the national secretary should know about it.

“We are going to seat down and take a look at each of the presidential candidates and look at what they have for Nigeria and decide on who the party will support. All of you will be invited. We may even take the Eagle Square to do that. And I assure you, whoever the party decides on is who the party will support. It is Buhari, President Goodluck Jonathan or any of the presidential candidates of the other parties,” he said.
