At least one person was reported dead and another injured on Wednesday night after a container fell off an articulated truck and landed on five commercial buses at the Ojuelegba Motor Park in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the accident occurred around 9pm when there were not many people in the park.

It was learnt that the truck, which was carrying an unstrapped container, was ascending the overhead bridge, when the container fell on the commercial buses in the park.

The driver of the truck was said to have been trapped and died on the spot, while his conductor was seriously injured.

An official of the Lagos State Fire Service, who preferred anonymity, said, “The incident happened in the evening. The articulated truck was heading towards Ikorodu Road, when the container on it fell off.

“It fell between the two overheard bridges and landed on the five commercial buses.

“The number of casualties cannot be ascertained.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the incident, added that one person died.

He said, “At about 9pm, an articulated truck-driven by one Saheed, was heading towards Ikorodu Road, along Western Avenue, when it lost control and fell.

“The driver who died instantly was trapped under the bridge, while his conductor was taken to the Randle General Hospital for treatment.”

He said the corpse of the yet-to-be identified driver had been moved to the mortuary– while investigations were ongoing.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service were said to have evacuated the wreckage from the park.
