Adamawa Poll: Atiku Rallies Support for APC Candidate, Bindow

 Former Vice-President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has pleaded with other contestants on the APC platform to rally support for Senator Muhammad Jibrilla Bindow in order to dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Atiku’s plea came as the leadership of the PDP yesterday, equally appealed to all the governorship aspirants that contested the September 6 party’s governorship primaries to rally round the party’s governorship candidate, acting Governor Umaru Fintiri, to enable PDP emerge victorious in the October 11 by-election.

While congratulating Bindow for his emergence as the governorship candidate of the party in the primaries held on Sunday, Atiku said the party was on rescue mission and would need to galvanise the support of the people towards the goal.

A statement signed by the media office of the former vice-president yesterday, noted that the APC in Adamawa State had by the conduct of a free, fair and transparent primaries devoid of any rancour signalled its intention to work together to wrestle power from the PDP in the state.

The former vice-president, who voted in Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area of the state, called on the other contestants to rally support for Bindow in the interest of the party’s unity.

The Turaki Adamawa said as a democrat, he had accepted the result of the APC primaries and urged other party members to follow suit.

“As a democrat, I accept the outcome and ask all party members in the state to do the same. As members of a truly democratic party, the outcome of the election is binding on all party members and we must all work to pull our support behind the candidate of our great party during the governorship election.”

He stressed that the APC primaries in the state was not a personality contest, but a rescue mission, which would pave the way for the transformation and economic development of the state and the wellbeing of its citizens.

According to him, “it is a mission which all patriots and friends of the state must be a part of by ensuring victory for the APC in the October 11 election.”

Meanwhile, the PDP also congratulated Fintiri for his emergence as the party’s candidate for the by-election.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the PDP commended other aspirants for their “rare show of the spirit of sportsmanship and unwavering commitment to the party throughout the nomination process, in keeping with the ideals of the PDP and the visions of the founding fathers.”

The party stated in the statement that its leadership was “satisfied with the level of camaraderie and sense of purpose that characterised the primary election” and praised the delegates and all major stakeholders in the state for the orderly manner with which they conducted themselves during the exercise.

The party attributed the success of the exercise to the “spirit of oneness within the fold in Adamawa state, effectively harnessed through the insistence by the national leadership on the strict adherence to the tenets of internal democracy, which provided accommodation for all in line with the ideology of the party and principles of fairness, justice and equity.”

The leadership therefore charged all its members in Adamawa to close ranks as one family and support the candidate to ensure the success of the party in the governorship election.

In the same vein, the leadership of the party also congratulated its candidate, Dr. Shem Zagbayi Nuhu, for emerging victorious at the Niger East senatorial by-election.

It described the outcome of the election as a confirmation of the popularity of the PDP among the people at the grassroots, stating that Niger State remains “a stronghold of the PDP.”

It tasked its members to continue to work hard to ensure that they remained pre-eminent ahead of the 2015 general election.
