The planned defection of the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has received a boost following the endorsement of the move by prominent traditional rulers in the state.
In response to an invitation from the ruling national party for the governor to join it from its present Labour Party platform, Mimiko had commenced series of consultations with stakeholders in the state regarding the PDP’s overture.
At one of such consultations with some prominent traditional rulers in the state at the weekend, the governor sought their advice, even as they took turn to eulogise his person and character.
The traditional rulers consequently declared their support for the governor to accede to the request.
They expressed their satisfaction with his leadership style as well as his ability to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
Sources privy to the meeting disclosed that the traditional rulers commended the governor for deeming it fit to carry them along regarding the overture despite the fact that they are not politicians.
The Amapetu of Mahin Kingdom, Oba Lawrence Omowale, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, was said to have particularly given credit to the governor for his political wizardry and his ability to take the state to the mainstream of the national politics.
Declaring the traditional rulers’ belief in the political judgment of Mimiko, the Obas pledged the support of the traditional institution in the state for him in his political pursuit.
Mimiko had earlier consulted with different interest groups in the state to intimate them of the PDP’s overture.
Among them, the state’s House of Assembly, religious leaders, captains of industries, workers union, chiefs and community leaders.
During proceedings, the stakeholders pledged their total support for the governor in his decision regarding the PDP’s invitation, even as he was praised for the decision to consult widely
Speaking on behalf of her colleagues during consultation with Mimiko on the issue, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Jumoke Akindele, commended the move of the governor to consult with the assembly on the request and declared that he has the support of lawmakers in acceding to the overture.
“We all joined the Labour Party because of Mr. Governor, and for him to have consulted with us over this issue is a great privilege. Like Ruth, we pledge this day that your (Mimiko) God will always be our God.
“This is the most rational thing to do at the moment in view of the fact that Mr. Governor is not going for a third term in office. He would not have engaged us in this wide consultation if he is a selfish leader. That is why we are offering our support for a better Ondo State,” the Speaker had said.
