Nigeria Will Benefit from Jonathan’s Participation at US-African Summit, Says Uzodimma

 Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s outing at the recently concluded three-day United States-Africa Leaders Summit, saying the country will benefit immensely even as it has further enhanced the position of Nigeria in the comity of nations.

Responding to journalists’ questions at the Dr. Sam Mbakwe Airport Owerri, Imo State, at the weekend, Uzodimma noted that the summit had further strengthened ties between the US and Nigeria.

The senator was on his way to attend the burial of Pa Paulinus Opara, father of the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), Mr. John Kennedy Opara.

He added that Jonathan’s presence at the summit had advanced the two countries shared interests in trade and investment and highlighted America’s commitment to Nigeria’s security, its democratic development and the people.

According to him, the summit with the theme: ‘Investing in the Next Generation’, reflected the common ambition that the people and government of the US share with Nigeria in a bid to leave Nigeria better for her future generations by making concrete gains in peace and security, good governance and economic development.

Uzodimma explained that following the extensive consultations the President Jonathan had with various interest groups and investors, there were high prospects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country, which in the long run, would check the unemployment and security challenges being faced by in country.

He said the summit extensively discussed Africa’s potential as a new centre of global growth, which is creating more opportunities for its people and Nigeria as investors destination “stands to benefit immensely,” adding that new markets would be created with democracy reinforced and stabilised.
On insurgency in the country, the senator said it was a global challenge which is not peculiar to Nigeria and requires the synergy of all to tackle.  He faulted insinuations in certain quarters that President Jonathan was not doing enough to tackle terrorism and appealed to such Nigerians to stop playing politics with the issue.

Uzodimma, who is also a member of Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called on Nigerians to continue to support the President in his transformation agenda.

At a dinner after the summit which was held in his honour by the US Chambers of Commerce and the Corporate Council on Africa, President Goodluck Jonathan said the volume of trade between Nigeria and the US which rose to a record $36 billion per annum, would continue to grow.
