Ogoni People Working against UNEP Report, Says IJF

The Ijaw Justice Forum (IJF) has said it is amazed at the disposition of some Ogoni people to the quest for the implementation of the UNEP report amidst massive contamination of their environment.

The President of the Forum, Comrade Tom Douglas, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Sapele, Delta State, also allegedly fingered Fred Kpakol, Jerry Needam and Ejoor Ngowah Ejoor among persons he perceived were working against the implementation of the report.

According to him, “My pronouncement is based on investigation,” he said, lamenting that: “Some Ogoni people, instead of building path for development, were constituting themselves as clog in the wheel of the ethnic nationality for pecuniary benefits, which is wicked.

“From what Shell said, the federal government has been frustrating the release of funds for the implementation of the 2011 United Nations report on Ogoniland. Regrettably, some Ogonis are happy with the development.

“Even the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, who these Ogonis are supporting for governorship position, faulted President Goodluck Jonathan for the delay in the implementation of the report as expressed during the last Ogoni day celebration at Bori.”

While commending Senator Magnus Abe’s political decision to protest against the delay in implementing the report, Douglas berated President Jonathan for allegedly not recognising the sacrifices Ogonis made toward the political emancipation of the Niger Delta region.

He asked: “Ogonis spill blood on the altar of the Niger Delta struggle; today, we have a president and yet their water is contaminated, ecosystem gone and the people living in danger. What is their sin that cannot be forgiven?”

The IJF president observed that: “Just like Asari Dokubo said, Ijaws in Rivers State are behind the people of Ogoni to produce the next governor in 2015, we therefore urged registered political parties in the state to adopt only the Ogonis as standard bearers.”
Douglas, however advised the people of Ogoni not only to unite in the face of challenges but to also resist anti-elements among them.
