The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved N5.6billion for the completion of Mangu Dam in Plateau State.
The dam is part of the regional water supply scheme in the state.
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, announced the approval while briefing State House correspondents, shortly after the weekly FEC meeting.
The beneficiary of the contract according to Maku, is Messrs Infiouest Limited, with the completion time frame of 36 months. When completed, about 10 communities with an estimated population of about 700,000 people would benefit from the project.
Maku listed the communities to benefit from it as Mangu, Gindiri, Mangu Hale, Kudunu, Vodni, Payam, Pushit, Ampier, Mangun and Lagai.
The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, who also briefed journalists, disclosed that about 12,000 people within the ten communities would get employment opportunities at the completion of the project.
She added that budgetary provision of N5.4 billion had been disbursed to her by President Goodluck Jonathan from the Hydraulic Infrastructure and National Security Fund, with another N100 million appropriated for the project in the 2014 budget; while the balance of N101 million will be provided in the 2015 budget to complete the project.
Similarly, the FEC approved the ratification of the decisions of the 24th Congress of Universal Postal Union (UPU) adopted at Geneva on August 12, 2008 as contained in the Acts
According to Maku, “the Minister of Communications Technology presented another memorandum to seek council’s approval to accede to the amendments of the Universal Postal Union’s Acts as contained in the decisions adopted by the 24th Universal Postal Congress in Geneva on August 12, 2008.
“The reason for the amendments of the UPU Acts is to enable Nigeria as a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), benefit from the various provisions that will strengthen our postal service to compete favourably with private operators locally and globally, increase revenue and provide better universal postal services.
“Council approved the ratification of the Decisions of the 24th Congress of the UPU adopted at Geneva on August 12, 2008 as contained in the Acts.
“Also, the ratification of the instruments is also in line with the ongoing Postal Reform process that will place NIPOST on a more commercially viable platform to address the global challenges to postal services in addition to other benefits.
“After deliberations, Council ratified revised instruments of the Pan African Postal Union in Compliance to Chapter VII, Article 29 of the Convention that required all signatory member countries to ratify and deposit same with the Secretary General through Ministry of Foreign Affairs as may be appropriate and directed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to commence the process of domestication and ratification of the revised instruments of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU).”
