Reports about abduction of women in the North-east have seldom been out of the headlines since the April 14 kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls at Chibok, in Borno State. But they have largely been denied by the government and the affected communities.
While it may not be good to completely dismiss the stories as false alarm, until proper investigations have been conducted, all stakeholders must realise that alerting the public to kidnap incidents that did not happen only worsens the sense of insecurity in the land. It also makes the work of the security agencies more difficult.
The federal and state authorities as well as communities in the affected areas must work together to stop the spread of anxieties that will not do the country any good.
