The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Olamilekan Adegbite, who disclosed this in Abeokuta, also said the two bridges would be opened to traffic soon, bringing to three, the number of flyover bridges completed by the Senator Ibikunle Amosun government so far.
According to him, the flyover bridges were constructed to tackle the incessant traffic bottleneck often experienced around the two areas considered as the commercial nerve centres of the state capital.
“The construction of flyover bridges and roads across the state will ensure an increase in socio-economic activities as well as reduction in the incessant traffic bottleneck experienced daily by commuter,” he said.
Adegbite said the two bridges are constructed along the nine -kilometre Brewery-OGTV road which was still under construction.
“The huge investment of the administration on road infrastructure is not only to beautify the state and curtail road accidents but to also open up and properly position the state and make it investment friendly,” the commissioner added.
Also, the state Bureau of Transportation (BOT) has started the installation of Intelligent Traffic Signal (ITS) on its newly constructed roads to ensure the safe monitoring through adequate traffic management and control.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Gbenga Opesanwo, stated in Abeokuta and said the ITS would help in reducing time being wasted in traffic grid lock across the metropolis compared to the semi-automated lights that had been in use.
“We have completed the pilot phase of the deployment of ITS lights. These lights have cameras and sensors which detect the density of traffic and manage it accordingly.
“These components are also expandable and can be used for sundry purposes, including addressing security issues that may arise,” he said.
He underscored the importance of data collection and management in transportation, saying that the passenger-flow-pattern and travel demand were now being regularly conducted.
“The information captured is to be shared amongst relevant ministries, departments and agencies, including security agencies as may be necessary. For instance, we observed a 12.3 per cent increase in vehicular traffic within the state capital in a three month period between August and November 2013,” he stated.
He added that 73,000 motorcyclists have been captured in the bureau data base, using the platform of the Riders Card Scheme.
Opesanwo said the agency would exploit other modes of transportation, while the riverine areas would receive some form of intervention, promising that the bureau would continue to improve on the quality of its personnel through capacity building to ensure accelerated development in the sector.
