The immediate past Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and a delegate to the ongoing National Conference, Chief Anayo Nnebe, has deplored the purported dethronement of the chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya.

Nnebe, who spoke in an interview with THISDAY at the weekend, said the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has no power to remove a traditional ruler without following due process, alleging a vendetta against the royal father for refusing to join in opposition to President Goodluck Jonathan.

The government of the state said last week that it had withdrawn the certificate of Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, who is also the Chairman, South-east Traditional Rulers Council as the traditional ruler in the state.

A statement signed and circulated to journalists covering the National Conference by Deputy Chief of Staff to the governor and immediate past Commissioner for Information, Chief Chinedu Offor, said Eze Ilomuanya was nominated to the National Conference on the platform of traditional rulers and now he has been dethroned, he should pave way for another serving traditional ruler to take his place at the conference.

However, the former speaker said the action of the state government has political undertone and should be disregarded.

"It is clear that his refusal to join the governor in the fight against the president and the People Democratic Party (PDP) is the cause of his problem with the state government," he said.

Nnebe described the announcement of the dethronement of the traditional ruler, as baseless, null and void and should be disregarded in its entirety, adding that royal father should go ahead with his duties.

"It is very unfortunate and depicts the level of impunity in the country. The affected traditional ruler is not just presiding over his community but has been the chairman of the Imo Council of Traditional Rulers for years and the chairman of the South-east Council of Traditional rulers.

"I think it is purely political because we are aware that chief Ilomuanya, as the chairman of Traditional rulers council and of the south east, commands a lot of influence. In fact, he is among the revered traditional rulers in the country with contacts across the whole country.

"The truth of the matter is that the state government has no power whatsoever to get up one morning and remove a traditional ruler without following due process. The traditional ruler was never investigated or indicted. As far as I am concerned, what the state government has done was wrong and this is the height of rascality and irresponsibility,” he added.
