Barely 24 hours after commercial football viewing centres for the beaming live transmission of the FIFA World Cup were banned in Adamawa and Yobe States, the Plateau State Police Command yesterday banned similar centres in the state from operating during the period of the ongoing World Cup. It said the centres had become targets of terrorist attacks.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Dominic Esin, the police said: “This is to inform members of the public particularly owners of football viewing centres and football fans that there is a total ban on football viewing centres in every nook and cranny of the state in respect of the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup.
“This precautionary measure is aimed at forestalling warnings of impending attacks on these viewing centres by any person or group of persons and to secure an atmosphere of peace and security on the Plateau.”
The police strongly advised football fans to stay away form such centres and watch all the matches of the Brazil 2014 FIFA world cup in their respective houses.”
The statement warned that anyone who violates this order which took effect immediately would face the full wrath of the law.
Recently, some people were killed and many others injured in separate attacks on viewing centres in the state, thereby prompting the ban.
