NIGERIA: Political Leaders, Democracy Activists to Storm Abiola’s House on June 12

Prominent political leaders in the country, long-time associates of the late presumed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential elections and democracy activists across the country, will be hosted to  a tribute session and breakfast colloquium on the state of the nation on Thursday, June 12, at the residence of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola in Ikeja, Lagos

The event being organised by the June 12 movement, the umbrella body for June 12 democracy activism in Nigeria, is billed to commence by 8a.m. and end by 12noon to allow other affiliates of the movement subsequently attend various programme lined up for the celebration of this year June 12 anniversary, which is the 21st in the series of commemorations by the June 12 movement.

Speaking on behalf of the national organising team in Lagos yesterday, the moderator of the breakfast tribute session, Chief Olawale Okunniyi, said this year’s convergence promises to be historic as over 250 leaders of conscience and activists all over the globe are being invited to pay tributes and address the state of the nation at  the residence of the MKO Abiola in Lagos

"We have also decided to use this year's event to set popular agenda for the ongoing national conference in view of the growing insurgency, militancy and ominous instability in the country ahead of the 2015 elections, which already appears to be gathering explosive storms

Therefore, prominent political leaders and activists who are also delegates to the ongoing national conference as well as progressive youth activists and leaders have been slated to play key role at this year's event tagged "June 12: The National Conference and Growing Insecurity: The way out," Okunniyi said

The movement also implored the federal government to use this year anniversary to give MKO Abiola a posthumous recognition as one of the presidents of the country and the benefits there from given to his immediate family

According to the movement, some of those expected to play key role and speak at this year's celebration are progressive political leaders, state governors, members of national and state assemblies and delegates of the national conference members of the Abiola family, among others.
