Lafia—The Nasarawa State House of Assembly yesterday in Lafia summoned the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Dan’Azumi.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the commissioner was summoned over the N2.5 billion Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, fund.
The assembly gave the order during a motion under matter of public interest, moved by Mr. Francis Orogu, the House Committee Chairman on Public Account.
Orogu, member representing Keana constituency, alleged that the ministry spent the state local councils’ SURE-P fund without approval from the assembly.
He said: “My colleagues, I wish to draw your attention to one of the sensitive issues affecting our local governments in the state.
“In the course of my committee’s oversight function, we discovered that an average of between six million Naira and N12 million have been allocated to the various local governments in the state under SURE-P by the Federal Government.”
“The SURE-P allocation started from April 2012 and at February 2014 when we went for the oversight function, the federal government had remitted over N2.5 billion to the13 local governments in the state.
“This SURE-P fund was spent without the permission and approval from the state House of Assembly and the SURE-P account is showing zero, a red account.
“I am calling on my colleagues to support the motion to summon the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to appear before the house to explain how the SURE-P fund was used.”
