Governor Theodore Orji monday named yet another set of transition committee chairmen to oversee the affairs of the 17 local governments, erasing heightened expectation that council poll would be held before the 2015 general election.

The secretary made the list of the TC chairmen nominated by the governor know
n in a statement to the State Government (SSG) Prof Mkpa A. Mkpa. He said the names had been forwarded to the House of Assembly for screening and asked the nominees to await further directives.

Not surprisingly the list of TC chairmen contained some names that have been recycled several times either as elected or appointed council chairmen. They include Dr. Christian N.C. Okoli, Aba South; Ezebunwa Ubani, Ugwunagbo; Mrs. Amarachi Dede, Isuikwuato; Emma Ukwu Rocks, Bende and Ginger Onwusibe, Isiala Ngwa South local government.

Orji had on September 2012 announced his intention to hold council poll in January 2013, but the House of Assembly swiftly intervened asking for a shift in date on the ground that the State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) would not prepare well for the poll within the time period.

Although the lawmakers suggested that the poll date be shifted to April 2013, nothing has been done about it and ABSIEC has been devoid of preparatory activities ever since.
The last local government poll in Abia was held in January 2008 and since the expiration of the tenure of the elected council chairman in 2010, there had been no other election.

Orji had explained that he needed to clean up the local government system because of huge debts he inherited in salary arrears as well as over-bloated workforce due to the ghost worker syndrome.

Most states had been running their councils without elected chairmen and councilors hence it was no longer an issue of concern to governors nationwide as transition committee administration had become the norm across the nation.
