Former governor of the Old Western State, Gen. David Jemibewon (rtd.), has urged the Federal Government to establish a security trust fund to assist security personnel involved in the war against terrorism in Nigeria.

Since the suspected Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad group known by its Hausa name Boko Haram meaning “Western education is sin” started unleashing attacks in Nigeria, an estimated number of 11,000 people have been killed between 2002 and 2014, including security personnel.

However, the group is known for attacking churches, schools, and police stations and has also assassinated members of the Islamic establishment who have criticised the their activities.

But Jemibewon, who was Minister of Police Affairs during President Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 1999, believes that the only way the security personnel can commit themselves in the war against terrorism is if the federal government establishes a security trust fund and the money be ploughed into a central medical centre for the rehabilitation of those who would have been maimed during this crisis.

According to him, “many of our troops including the police may come back with amputated legs and hands. And the fund will be such that every Nigerian who believes that what we are facing now is a big tragedy for us will contribute to the fund.”
