Confident that its efforts with the global community to secure the safe release of the abducted students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, will be successful, the federal government yesterday moved to strengthen the humanitarian response plan.

Over 200 students of Chibok school were alleged to have been abducted by members of the Boko Haram sect last month.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday in Abuja, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Muhammed Sani-Sidi, said the one-day meeting was meant to validate a draft humanitarian response initiative for the abducted students.

"While the federal government is working assiduously towards the safe release of the abducted girls and reunite them with their family members, it is important that a sectoral response plan be prepared for their rehabilitation and reintegration back to normal life," he said.

Sani-Sidi said the objective of the initiative was to integrate all sectoral plans into a holistic multi-sector response plan to avoid duplication of  efforts and strengthen inter-agency collaboration while mobilising to deal with humanitarian challenges facing the people of Chibok Local Government Area.

According to him, though  NEMA and other actors had intervened by providing food and non-food items, such as medicaments, there are still gaps to be filled in order to meet the needs of the affected persons.
Some of the stakeholders who were present at the planning workshop included International Red Cross Society, Action Aid, Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Federal Ministries of Health, Water Resources, DFID, UNFPA, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), National Population Commission (NPC) and the Chairman of Chibok Local Government Area.
