The lingering crisis involving the Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, and the state House of Assembly has drawn the  attention of the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders of the party, forcing them to wade into the crisis.
In this regard, the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Musa  Kwankwoso, was in Adamawa State yesterday  to mediate between the governor and the state assembly.

Sources said the Kano State governor held a closed-door marathon meeting with Nyako and 10 principal officers out of the 25-member state assembly at the presidential lodge of the Government House in Yola.

Shortly after the reconciliation meeting, the Kano State governor declined comments on the issue of the alleged impeachment move by the legislators.

Kwankwaso said the reason for his visit to the state  was to cross-fertilise ideas with Nyako, whom he described as his elder brother in governance.

He stressed that his visit was to learn more from the Adamawa State Government especially in the areas of agriculture and skills acquisition for youths.

Kwankwaso said  the APC was not built on impunity or to engage in anything capable of hampering the progress and growth of Nigeria.

He added that it was as a result of this that the APC won all the 44 council chairmanship seats in the state in a free and fair election.

However, an impeccable source revealed that Kwankwaso was in Yola principally to act as a go-between Nyako and the legislators and also stave off any impeachment moves by the state assembly.

All the attempts made by THISDAY to speak to the 10 lawmakers proved abortive, as each of them kept mute, while the Speaker, Alhaji Umaru Ahmed Fintiri, was too busy to entertain questions from journalists.

Similarly, some prominent APC stalwarts, including Chief Audu Ogbeh, were at Nyako’s residence to meet with him.

All efforts to get them to speak also yielded no result, as one  of his aides said his principal came on a private visit to discuss some issues with the embattled governor in the interest of the country.

Tension had enveloped the state since news broke out of a possible impeachment plot against the governor as well as the move being made by the assembly to investigate the expenditure of the state government.

Meanwhile, the state assembly has given the governor and his government a three-day ultimatum to pay back the illegal deductions made from workers’ salaries and allowances for the month of May.

Stating this yesterday in Yola, the assembly directed that the state government, as a matter of urgency, refund the over N142 million allegedly deducted from the state workers’ salaries and allowances for this month.

According to the assembly, the said deductions were made with impunity and without negotiations with the workers and the relevant bodies concerned in the state.

Sequel to the salary deductions, the assembly had ordered  the state Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Ibrahim Buba Vokna, and the Accountant-General of the state, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir, to immediately submit to it, the statutory allocations particulars in respect of the months of April and May.

The speaker, presiding over the plenary session, resolved that the state government, through the two principal government officials, should ensure that the deductions made in the workers’ salaries are paid on or before May 30.

He said failure to refund the money would be regarded as contempt by the state government with respect to the directive of the assembly.

The two principal officials were also asked to submit to  the assembly expenditures for the two months  with immediate effect, and failure to do so the assembly would regard their action as contempt.

The directives were contained in the five-point resolution passed by the assembly yesterday, which also prevailed on the two principal officers to submit bank statements in respect of the April and May deductions.

The legislators also resolved that the state workers’ deductions withheld for the months of August and September in 2012 should be paid to them within two weeks of the resolutions of the assembly or be regarded as contempt.

The resolutions were sequel to the summoning of the two principal officials to the assembly to defend their actions on the deductions made on the workers’ salaries for the months of May as well as the failure of the state government to pay the backlog of 19 months salaries of teachers newly employed by the state government.
The body languages of the assembly in recent weeks had raised speculations in the state that it was planning to  impeach Nyako.

Also, the defection saga of the remaining  members of the APC in the assembly to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was a clear signal that all was not well between the assembly and the executive arm of government in the state.
