NIGERIA: Snatching of Ballot Boxes Mars Kano LG Election

Clashes between voters and some party members erupted in various polling units in Kano state during yesterday’s local government elections conducted by the state independent electoral commission (KANSEC).
It was learnt that most of the voters in various local government areas were unable to cast their votes due to clashes between the party supporters, while voters in Shanono, Kunchi, Kura, Bichi, Tsanyawa and Warawa LGAs decried a lot of abnormality during the conduct of the election.
 
In some areas visited by THISDAY, voters at Kofar Mata in Municipal and Kibiya councils were said to have attacked security agents guarding the units.
 
An election agent, who spoke under anonymity in Kura local government, revealed that “one person accosted my colleague at our polling unit and even when he was threatened with a gun, he refused to relent”.
 
Sources revealed that at Goma, a television crew was attacked, while reporters from a radio station were also attacked at Kibiya, while in some units in Kura showed some youths carrying cudgels, swords and baboon sticks at the poll.
 
In Gwarzo local government also, snatched of ballot boxes marred the conduct of the election in Kawuri, Kofar Fada, Tsohon Garu polling units.
 
Other areas witnessed ballot box snatches were Biremawan Waje, Biremawan Masaka, Koya  in Koya wards of the area, the election boxes were all destroyed by the aggrieved voters when the election was going on peacefully.
 
THISDAY efforts to contact the police spokesman, Magaji Majia, proved abortive.
 
In the inhabitant area of non-indigenes of Sabon Gari area by Emir road, voters were seen lined up without ballot papers and the polling agent, who refused to disclose his name, said the election material were said to have been thumb-printed the day before the election in favour of another party.
 
A visit to some units in Kura showed some youths carrying cudgels, swords and baboon sticks at the poll.
 
It was also learnt that the election witnessed low turnout because of the fear of harassment by some party members while others declined to come out because of their belief that the election would be in favour of one side.
The electoral commissioner for Media and Publicity, Ismail Garba, however, told reporters that he will investigate the case and call back which he did not.
