A prosecution witness in the trial of suspected murderers of late Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Funsho Williams, yesterday presented as evidence, before a Lagos High Court in Igbosere, a rope, knife, mattress and cushion allegedly recovered from the crime scene.
The witness, CSP Shehu Sanni Wazo, who came instead of Mr Agbo Beneth that the trial judge, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo, at the last sitting (Wednesday) summoned to come and tender the evidence, told the court that they could not get access to the bloodstained shirt recovered from the scene due to the short time the court gave them.
At the resumed hearing, the state counsel, Mrs E. I. Alakija, apologised for the absence of Beneth (from the forensic department) and applied that Wazo, also from the forensic department be permitted to tender the evidence, as the prosecution closed its case.
The judge admitted the exhibits recovered from crime scene as evidence and Alakija subsequently applied that the exhibits should be returned to the forensic lab to prevent contamination.
Defence counsel, Mr Agbara Okezie, while objecting to the prosecution’s application, argued that the evidence should be left in care of the court since it has already been tendered.
However, the judge over-ruled Okezie’s objection and ordered that the exhibits be returned to the lab, after which he adjourned the case to June 9 for adoption of written address.
The accused are, Bulama Kolo, Musa Maina, David Cassidy, Tunani Sonani, Mustapha Kayode and Okponwasa Imariabie, all male.
It will be recalled that the accused were first arraigned on March 1, 2013 before Justice Adebajo on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.
According to the charge, the accused on or about July 27, 2006, at 34A, Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, conspired to murder Williams.
The offence contravenes Sections 316 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
