The gang-up against Mr. Godwin Jedy Agba, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River continued at the weekend with the leadership of the party in the state saying he was not a registered member of the party and cannot seek its ticket. Jedy Agba, a son of the paramount ruler of Obudu Local Government Area, Uti J. D Agba, works with the NNPC and is the General Manager in charge crude oil.
He is billed to resign his position next month to pursue his political aspiration.
The state Chairman of the party, Mr. John Okon, who disowned Agba during a chat with journalists, said the aspirant was not known to the party nor was he at any time a card carrying member of the PDP.
“Goddy Agba is not a member of our party and our party has rules on the number of years you can stay before contesting for elective position. He is a civil servant. Let us wait for him to resign and come but I know he is not a member of our party,” he said.
But recently, the Director-General of the Jedy-Agba Campaign Organisation, Dr Sandy Onor, refuted claims that Agba was not a registered member of the party adding that those saying so were lying and advised them to check their records.
“My principal is a member of PDP and nobody has the right to so deny us especially when we have value to add. We are Nigerians and Cross Riverians. Why should you deny us membership especially when we have value to add? He is a card carrying member of the PDP,” Onor had said.
A restive Okon further defended his disclaimer: “Let me tell you, PDP cards are printed everywhere. Please get this right, if you want the PDP card you can get it anywhere. You can go to printing press and get one.
“But is that how you become the member of a party? Anybody can print a card anywhere, is that how they gain membership? You don’t just carry cards. You must also ensure the cards are incorporated in the register. Let him print as many cards as he can, he is not a member of the party.”
Besides disowning the oil magnate, the PDP through its state publicity secretary, Mr. Joe Bisong, took exception to the use of the party’s logo by Agba in his campaign posters and other materials, warning him to desist since he was not a member of the party.
The party advised aspirants who had already printed posters to withdraw it from circulation and vowed to punish defaulters. But this is unlike in other states of the federation.
“The attention of leadership of the PDP in Cross River State has been drawn to the use of campaign materials such as posters, billboards, stickers, customised T-shirts/face caps, appointment of Director-General of campaign organisation, local government and ward coordinators and opening of campaign offices by aspirants ahead of the approved guidelines for PDP primaries.
“For avoidance of doubt, the establishment of campaign offices, appointment of campaign structures such as Director General and coordinators and the use of campaign materials with PDP logo ahead of the party guidelines on its primaries are by this notice banned forthwith,” the statement said.
